Can You Have Your Own Truth?

Relativism says there is no truth. And it’s popular in America to say that you have your truth and I have mine.

But the first problem with relativism is that it’s logically self-defeating. For example, is relativism true for everyone? Is it absolutely true that there are no absolute truths? When you apply the claim to itself, it cuts off the limb that it’s sitting on.

Second, we all know that some things are objectively true for all people, everywhere. For example, is racism wrong? What about child sex-trafficking? Or torturing animals for fun? If these things are objectively wrong for all people everywhere then relativism is false.

Third, we know that George Washington was the first President of the United States. So, there are historical truths. The Nile River is in Egypt. So, there are geographical truths. Four is the square root of sixteen. So, there are mathematical truths. Two hydrogen and one oxygen molecule make water. So, there are scientific truths. And rape is wrong. So, there are moral truths.

And since we just agreed there are historic, geographic, mathematic, scientific, and moral truths, it’s clear that truth does exist, and relativism is false.
